Leading up to baseball’s winter meetings, we will take a daily look at some of the game’s top free agents and how they could potentially impact the Phillies.

Today: Mike Moustakas, a third baseman who’s been connected to the Phillies multiple times over the last two years and whose agent the Phillies have already touched base with this offseason.
The vitals

You know what you’re getting with Mike Moustakas: power, a .250ish batting average, an OPS about 10 percent above the league average and defense that won’t hurt you.

He’s not Top 5 at his position or even Top 10, but he’s a helpful player who can bat fifth or sixth and produce runs. Moustakas’ .845 OPS last season was 14th among qualifying third basemen, but it was 130 points higher than Maikel Franco’s. If the 2019 Phillies had Moustakas, they probably would have won a few more games.

Moustakas will play the 2020 season at age 31. His 101 home runs the last three seasons are 14th-most in the majors and fifth-most among third basemen. That list:

Nolan Arenado: 116
Eugenio Suarez: 109
Joey Gallo: 103
Manny Machado: 102
Mike Moustakas: 101
Why he fits

The Phillies need another productive everyday player at third base, shortstop or center field. Scott Kingery’s defensive flexibility allows the Phillies to pick from multiple position groups.

If the Phillies can add only one of Didi Gregorius or Moustakas, for example, they’d have to weigh whether Moustakas’ power or Gregorius’ all-around game is more beneficial to their infield.

For the Phillies, signing Moustakas to a two-year deal would allow them more time for Alec Bohm to develop (especially defensively) at Triple A. It would also buy the Phils an extra year to figure out whether Bohm can even play third base, whether Bohm may need to move to first base and make Rhys Hoskins expendable, or whether Bohm himself could be used as a trade chip.
Why he doesn’t fit

If you sign Moustakas to a two- or three-year deal, and Bohm does develop and force the issue, then what? Then you’ve created a problem for yourself and a need to trade somebody to make room on the infield corners.

In theory, it may sound like no big deal — if that happens, you can flip one of Hoskins, Bohm or Moustakas for a player at an area of need. But it doesn’t always work out that way. The league would see the Phillies’ need to make a deal and that would diminish some of the Phils’ leverage.

Moustakas’ age isn’t a big concern — at 31, he’s at the tail-end of his prime, and his next contract is unlikely to take him into his late-30s.
The price tag

Moustakas was forced to sign one-year deals each of the last two offseasons. He deserved better but the free-agent market isn’t always fair or linear.

Coming off a career-high 38 homers in 2017, Moustakas rejected the Royals’ qualifying offer of $15 million and ultimately had to settle for a one-year, $6.5 million deal to return to Kansas City.

Then Moustakas hit 28 homers and drove in 95 runs with a .774 OPS and had to settle for another one-year deal, this time for $10 million with Milwaukee ($3 million of which came in the form of a 2020 buyout from the Brewers).

This winter, Moustakas should finally find a multi-year deal. Something like two years, $24 million seems fair. Moustakas’ side (he’s represented by Scott Boras) will want more years, but teams will be hestitant to commit to his age-33 season. Moustakas still might get three years.

It will be interesting to see whether Moustakas or Josh Donaldson signs first. Both have incentive to let the other set the market. Donaldson was the better player in 2019 but Moustakas was the better and healthier player overall from 2017-19.
Scout’s take

“Fair defender. Power is solid, results are there. Limited athleticism. Threat in the middle of the lineup but the body gives concern for excessive years of commitment.”

The Phillies returned Odubel Herrera to their active roster Thursday, but it remains unclear if the outfielder will play again for the team after being suspended 85 games last season because of his arrest after a domestic violence incident in Atlantic City.

Activating Herrera was a procedural move; his suspension ran through the end of the season. He now counts against the team’s 40-man roster, which must be trimmed by Monday from 43 to 40. The Phillies could try to trade Herrera this offseason, but the Phillies likely would have to pay most of his salary because it’s difficult to see another team taking on Herrera’s remaining $21 million.

Phillies’ Odubel Herrera suspended for the remainder of the season after MLB wraps up investigation into domestic assault case

Herrera was charged with assault on Memorial Day after his girlfriend sought out security at the Golden Nugget casino and said she had been attacked in their hotel room. The police report said “handprint markings” were found on her neck, in addition to scratches. In July, she declined to press charges and the judge dismissed the case but said that decision was contingent upon Herrera’s completing counseling. He was suspended two days later by Major League Baseball and said in a statement that he “acted in an unacceptable manner and am terribly disappointed in myself.”

The Phillies could simply release Herrera, but the league’s collective bargaining agreement states that the transaction must be done for baseball reasons and not because of his suspension. The Phillies could point to the .216 batting average and .632 OPS Herrera posted in 539 plate appearances over his final calendar year, before his suspension, as a baseball reason. Before being suspended, Herrera already had played himself out of a starting role.

“He comes to spring training and we’ll see where his talents and abilities take him from there,” president Andy MacPhail said in July. “We’ll see what he’s stacked up against. Right now, we have [Andrew] McCutchen and [Jay] Bruce. We have [Adam] Haseley. We have [Roman] Quinn. We have [Bryce] Harper. It’s a crowded outfield. So we’ll have to see how he performs on the field.”

Eight players — Sean Rodriguez, Tommy Hunter, Logan Morrison, Juan Nicasio, Brad Miller, Nick Vincent, Corey Dickerson, and Drew Smyly — elected free agency Thursday, which brought the 40-man roster down to 44 players after relief pitcher Robert Stock was claimed off waivers from San Diego. It lowered to 43 players Friday when Jose Pirela, who will play in Japan, was released.

The Phillies will decline Pat Neshek’s $7 million option for 2020, but they have yet to announce their plans on the options for Jason Vargas ($8 million) and Jared Hughes ($3 million). Declining all three options would bring the Phillies to 40 players.

The heavier lifting will come Dec. 2, the deadline for the Phillies to decide if they will tender contracts to players such as Maikel Franco and Cesar Hernandez as they set their 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 draft.

PROJECTIONS: Realmuto’s contract should be priority No. 1, then get to work on the starting rotation behind Nola. Miller and Suarez earned the opportunity to stick around after being among the few highlights in another dismal September. Eflin earned his spot with a consistently good final seven starts. McCutchen is aiming to return from ACL surgery on opening day. Morgan was stellar until his first injured-list stint (7.16 ERA in final 16 games before a season-ending injury). Alvarez proved durable and reliable. Depending on health and what the club does with Pat Neshek (club option) and free agent Tommy Hunter, Garcia and Hammer could start the year in Triple-A. Grullon needs to improve his defense before the club can expect a reliable backup catcher.

PROJECTIONS: The Phillies must decide if they think Grullon (caught 17% would-be base stealers, 12 passed balls in Triple-A) will grow this offseason to produce more than Knapp (29%, three passed balls, .318 on-base percentage). Hunter has age and injuries working against him. Irvin and De Los Santos have undefined roles working against them, though Irvin’s stuff came back in September. Arano must get healthy and have a good spring, neither of which happened in 2019. Vargas has a club option with a $2 million buyout. One would believe he was a gap start until Klentak or another GM gets serious about adding rotation pieces. Bruce could come back in a bench role. The health of McCutchen and Quinn and how the club values Haseley are factors. Free agent Dickerson likely heads elsewhere to start. Velasquez is a frustrating talent who could be a reliever, starter or left fielder. It appears time to move on from Hernandez and it’s hard to justify keeping Pivetta’s baggage. The Phils could do a lot worse than Gosselin on the bench. They did the last two years.

Medina, also 22, limped to the finish line in Reading (8.24 ERA, .305 batting average against in his final seven starts). But he’s probably not going anywhere unless the Phils package him for an MLB starter.

With already completing a trade to in this year’s MLB FanSided offseason simulation, it was time to head to the free agent market to find a way to improve the team.

For the last few years, the MLB Division at FanSided has put together an offseason simulation with the sites playing General Manager. I am in charge of the Pittsburgh Pirates offseason simulation this year. Each team has been able to submit trades to one another as well as trying to bid on free agents.

Yesterday, I discussed my trade with the Philadelphia Phillies (Phillies TBOH). The trade had the Pittsburgh Pirates sending outfielder Starling Marte and reliever Keone Kela to the Phillies. Coming back to the Bucs in the deal was a package of four prospects, including three who are close to MLB ready. The list included top pitching prospect Adonis Medina, outfielder Adam Haseley, catcher Deivy Grullon, and infield prospect Kendall Simmons.

While the trade made with the Phillies was supposed to help bring in talent that will help in a shorter time frame, the team still needs plenty of help. When looking at the free-agent market, I thought it was important to not just add some starting pitching depth, but some quality starting pitching depth. On top of that, it was important to find a quality left-hander for the rotation, something the team has been missing in the last few years.

So as General Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates I extended a reasonable, two-year contract offer to free-agent pitcher Wade Miley. Miley was getting a lot of one year offers and so the second year was a big part of getting a deal done. Financially speaking, the deal was worth $17.5 million or, $8.75 million per season. A two-year deal seemed like a perfect fit on the Pittsburgh Pirates end of things. This gives them a quality lefty to help compete and win games with a growing team. Also, he would be back for 2021 when the team projects to really compete.
LHP
Free Agent: Wade Miley
Starting Pitcher Career Numbers: 85-82, 4.23 ERA, 7.15 K/9, 49% Ground Ball Percentage

Wwith it being a two-year deal, it is a relatively safe deal to make. He would be easy to flip in a trade if he was not performing well enough, or if he was really performing well and a team was looking to get a starter with contractual control. Really, the contract made a lot of sense from all angles in terms of team success or value of a solid, left-handed starter.

Miley pitched for the Houston Astros last season and was with the Brewers in 2018. Over the last two years, Miley has had somewhat of a career resurgence. In 2018 he was really impressive in his 16 starts with the Brewers posting a 2.57 ERA. He followed it up with a 3.98 ERA with Houston this past season. While he regressed some, he still put up a strong season and if he repeated those results he would be worth $8.75 million per season.
Next: Trade with Phillies

With Miley slotting into the rotation, it gives some extra flexibility to potentially deal one of the starters. With the change over in management, it might be the time to just move on from Chris Archer. He is owed $9 million this upcoming year and has an option for 2021. Miley has been much better than Archer the last two seasons and would essentially replace him at a cheaper rate. To say the least, there has been a decent bit of interest for Archer by other FanSided GM’s so it seems likely that a deal will be struck.

The Phillies added four pitchers to their 40-man roster on Wednesday night, including Cristopher Sanchez, who was acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Sanchez, 23, is a 6-5 left-hander from the Dominican Republic who pitched mostly at the Single A level in 2019. The Rays were out of room on their 40-man roster and believed Sanchez would be lost in next month’s Rule 5 draft so they peddled him to the Phillies for infielder Curtis Mead, a 19-year-old from Australia who played in the Gulf Coast League last summer.

Sanchez will come to big-league spring training camp in February, but he needs more development time in the minors as he has pitched just 1⅓ inning above the Single A level. Sanchez’ fastball can reach 97 mph. The Phils might have something if the lanky lefty can put it together.

The Phillies also added JoJo Romero, Garrett Cleavinger and Mauricio Llovera to the roster. Romero and Cleavinger are both lefties and Llovera is a power-armed right-hander. All three could figure in the big club’s bullpen picture at some point in 2020.

Romero, 23, was the Phillies’ fourth-round draft pick in 2016. He struggled as a starter at Double A and Triple A in 2019 but pitched well out of the bullpen in Arizona Fall League, giving up just one earned run in 10⅔ innings.

Cleavinger, 25, was a third-round pick by the Orioles in 2015. The Phillies acquired him for Jeremy Hellickson in the summer of 2017. Cleavinger has strikeout stuff – he punched out 83 batters and allowed just 32 hits in 51⅔ innings at Double A Reading in 2019 – but control is an issue as he walked 34.

Llovera, who turns 24 in April, has long impressed club officials with his power arm. He struck out 72 in 65⅓ innings at Reading in 2019.

Players added to the 40-man roster by Wednesday’s deadline cannot be selected in the Rule 5 draft at the winter meetings next month. The Phillies’ roster stands at 39.

The Phillies left a couple of notable young players unprotected. Catcher Rafael Marchan and power-hitting outfielder Jhailyn Ortiz will both be eligible for the Rule 5 draft. If selected by another club, they must spend the entire season in the majors. Both Marchan and Ortiz will play at 21 next season. Neither has played above the Florida State League and both are in need of more development time so the Phillies stand a good shot of hanging on to both.

Ortiz made headlines in the summer of 2015 when the Phillies signed him out of the Domincan Republic for $4 million. He has big power – 19 homers at Single A Clearwater in 2019 – but contact is an issue. He has racked up 297 strikeouts in 835 at-bats while hitting just .212 the last two seasons at the Single A level.

Since 2012, the Phillies have non-tendered contracts to three arbitration-eligible players; Maikel Franco and Cesar Hernandez could soon join that list.

As Thanksgiving has come and gone, the next important date of the Major League Baseball offseason is just days away: Monday’s 8 p.m. deadline for clubs to decide whether to “non-tender” their arbitration-eligible players.

When an arbitration-eligible player becomes “non-tendered,” their previous club is declining to offer them a contract for the upcoming season; therefore, the player is immediately made a free agent.

Players are up for non-tender consideration if they are on the 40-man roster and have fewer than six years of Major League service time. Reasons players could be no-tendered include that the club believes a salary increase they would receive in arbitration exceeds their on-field value, and/or that the club simply wants to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

The Phillies have nine players eligible for arbitration this offseason: LHP Jose Alvarez, RHP Zach Eflin, 3B Maikel Franco, 2B Cesar Hernandez, C Andrew Knapp, LHP Adam Morgan, RHP Hector Neris, C J.T. Realmuto, and RHP Vince Velasquez.

While Eflin and Realmuto are surely locks to be tendered contracts by Monday’s deadline, the same cannot be said for Franco and Hernandez.

The Phillies have been rumored to be trying to trade either player, and have already explored options for their replacements in the infield, such as Didi Gregorius, Mike Moustakas, and Josh Donaldson, among others.

Click through to see the three most recent players, since 2012, that the Phillies have decided to non-tender and the avoid arbitration process with.

PHILADELPHIA — Is Bobby Abreu a Hall of Famer?

It is a question that will be asked, answered and debated over the next couple of months. On Monday, Abreu appeared on the 2020 Hall of Fame ballot for the first time following an 18-year career, including nine dominant seasons with the Phillies from 1998-2006.

• 2020 Hall of Fame ballot

Abreu is one of six players on the ballot with Phillies connections. The others are Raul Ibanez, Cliff Lee, Scott Rolen, Curt Schilling and Billy Wagner. Schilling is entering his eighth out of 10 years of eligibility, and his name appeared on 60.9 percent of ballots cast last year. Rolen (entering his third, 17.2 percent last year) and Wagner (entering his fifth, 16.7 percent) also return to the ballot.

• Complete Hall of Fame coverage

Players need to appear on 75 percent of ballots for enshrinement.

“I really do think about it,” Abreu said this summer when he was inducted onto the Phillies’ Wall of Fame. “There’s some numbers there. Right now, people have more time to see what I did in baseball. I know I don’t have 500 homers, but I did a lot of things in the game that right now people are starting to see what’s going on.”

It will be interesting to see how Abreu fares, but his numbers do stack up. He slashed .291/.395/.475 in his career. Abreu had 2,470 hits and stole 400 bases. He played in more than 150 games in 13 consecutive seasons (1998-2010), while his 1,990 games in right field rank 11th on the all-time list.

Abreu posted a 60.0 career WAR, according to Baseball Reference, and the site’s Hall of Fame Monitor gives him a score of 94, where a score of 100 indicates a likely Hall of Famer. Its Hall of Fame Standards gives Abreu a score of 54, where the average Hall of Famer has a score of 50. The JAWS system ranks Abreu as the 20th-best right fielder in baseball history with a 60.0 career WAR and a 41.6 WAR over a seven-year peak. The average right fielder has a 71.5 career WAR and a 42.1 WAR over a seven-year peak.

Thirteen of the 19 right fielders ranked ahead of Abreu are in the Hall of Fame. Larry Walker, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Dwight Evans, Reggie Smith, Ichiro Suzuki and Sammy Sosa are not. But there are numerous right fielders ranked below Abreu who are in the Hall of Fame: Vladimir Guerrero, Elmer Flick, Enos Slaughter, Willie Keeler, Sam Rice, Harry Hooper, Kiki Cuyler, Chuck Klein, King Kelly and Sam Thompson.

In other words, Abreu is not a shoo-in, but he deserves serious consideration.

Lee (43.5 WAR) and Ibañez (20.4 WAR) are on the ballot for the first time as well, though they are both long shots. They must appear on five percent of the ballots to remain on the ballot. Schilling’s percentage has been up and down over the years, but it has crept toward enshrinement the past two years, with 60.9 percent in 2019 versus 51.2 percent in ’18.

Major League Baseball is looking for ways to reallocate money and sadly the Boston Red Sox may lose one of their key affiliates in the process.

Everyone is trying to find ways to save more money these days and the sports world is no different. As we all know the Red Sox are doing their best to try and shave money from the payroll to reset their CBT penalty ahead of 2020. Major League Baseball as an entity is also trying to find ways to keep more in the bank account and their new proposal will directly affect Boston.

In the new proposal put forth by the MLB, the organization will be attempting to cut ties with several minor league affiliates, 42 to be exact, in order to save money. Though they haven’t said it’s a direct way to save money, their reasoning is to restructure how the money is spent in order to improve the conditions of other minor league facilities.

As far as the Red Sox are concerned, they would be losing their ties to the Lowell Spinners. Now, there may be some of you out there that hear that name and move right past it. I fully understand that as we all know there is a ridiculous amount of layers to the minor league system. The Spinners are in the New York Penn League and actually made it to the Championship Series this past season.

Lowell has seen some of the top players in Red Sox history come through the clubhouse. Mookie Betts and Brandon Workman are a pair on the current team. While Kevin Youkilis, Jonathan Papelbon, and Jacoby Ellsbury have all tasted World Series glory after spending time with the Spinners. Though they’re in the Class-A Short Season League the team has a proven track record for talent.

Losing the Spinners from the lineup may just be a blip on the radar in the grand scheme but it would hurt in the long run. Baseball is in a rare breed where there are multiple layers you must stop at before you are truly considered a professional.

I fully believe that if you’re in the minors you’re a professional and should be paid as such, but that’s not reality. Yeah, you have the guys that cruise through the systems but the case is more often than not a player gets stuck in MiLB purgatory.

Red Sox Prospect Watch: Minor League regular season is over

The benefit of having so many layers to the onion is that it gives players plenty of time to hone their craft and develop. We’ve all seen it where a guy is assigned to a level that he’s clearly not ready for.

Then there’s the situation where a player may be a starter but would be better as a reliever. Having the opportunity to spend time at different levels of the minors gives a player the time to work with the coaches to become a better asset to the big club.

If the proposal goes through and the 42 teams are no longer affiliated with their MLB counterparts, this can only hurt the game at the top level. Yes, we may see some improvements to higher-ranked MiLB organizations, but it’s not worth losing another layer for talent to develop within.

I attended a Greenville Drive (Red Sox Class-A affiliate) game this summer and the experience was top notch. The field, as well as the park as a whole, were in pristine condition and the game itself was fantastic.

I can only imagine what the team could do if they were given a bigger budget to work with but I’m not sure if I’m willing to find out at the cost of another team. As things are lining up right now the elimination of the teams on the MLB’s list could take effect after 2021.
Next: Free Agent Target: José Iglesias

The Red Sox have one of their strongest crops of talent in franchise history at the moment. From top to bottom the lineup is filled with guys that spent time in their minor league system. Losing one of those affiliates could only have negative ramifications as now the players will have fewer places to work on their skills.
